Agamemnon :: essays research papers
After reading Agamemnon, I have come to the conclusion that Greek mythology can cause many debates. One of the debates that could be referenced from this story was rather or not Agamemnon deserved his fate. Some critics would say he did after he killed his innocent daughter, as a sacrifice. Some critics would say he was killed because he left his wife at home for ten years. Those ten years while they were apart, Clytaemestra had time to let all of her anger and hostility boil up inside of her. He was portrayed as an arrogant man. Another thing that condemned him was when he walked on the purple carpet. ââ¬Å"She knew that by saying ââ¬Å"If Priam had won as you have, what would he have done?â⬠(935). Even though his wife coaxed him, his cowardliness in doing so shows his true side. He was very arrogant about the war, acting as if him alone won the war. All of his arrogance and betraying his family killing his daughter lead to his death. Another debate is what kind of women Clytaemestra is. Clytemnestra is portrayed as strong willed woman. This characteristic is not necessarily typical of women of her time. Her most important characteristic is like the watchman calls it, "male strength of heart." Later in the play after Clytemnestra murders her husband, Agamemnon, and his concubine, Cassandra, she reveals her driving force and was has spurned all of her actions until this point. The Chorus sees Clytemnestra as untrustworthy and although suspicious of her they still could not foresee the impending murders. Her words are plain but her meaning hidden to all those around her. She more or less alludes to her plan of murder without fear of being detected. Only the audience can seem to understand the double meaning in her words. One example of how Clytemnestra hides meanings in otherwise plain words is stated in her hope that Agamemnon and his soldiers do not commit any sacrilege in Troy that might offend the gods. Now must they pay due respect to the gods that inhabit the town, the gods of the conquered land, or their victory may end in their own destruction after all. Too soon for their safety, the soldiery, seized with greed, may yield to their covetousness and lay hands on forbidden spoil. They have still to bring themselves home, have still the backward arm of the double course to make.

Memo for ABC Complete Kitchens Inc Essay
ââ¬Å"Great organizations demand a high level of commitment by the people involvedâ⬠- Bill Gates. Introduction Having the right man for the right job is imperative for corporate success. The person that installs the cabinetry for ABC Inc. is probably not the same person you want managing the financial responsibilities and obligations. Employees of ABC Complete Kitchens Inc. encompass a similar work ethic, professionalism and accountability however; their skills vary and need to be accommodated suitably within the company. Maintaining this level of expectation is imperative to achieve organizational success. Maturity, health, financial stability and the ability to compensate accordingly to current and long term fiscal challenges is the responsibility of the financial manager and within this organization or for ABC Inc. the Chief Financial Officer (CFO). The CFO assesses, directs, monitors, controls, develops strategies, plans for current and long term financial goals and most importantly determines the organizations investment decisions. The CFO and/or financial manager must ââ¬Å"weigh the costs and benefits of all investments and projects and decide which of them qualify as good uses of the moneyâ⬠(Northcentral University, 2011. 7; 709). This is money invested by others as well as yourselves within this company. There are three main tasks financial managers are responsible for beyond applying managementà standards to financial capital or income of this conglomerate. These consist of; making (preferably good) investment decisions, financial decisions and managing the companyââ¬â¢s cash flow on a day to day and a long term basis. In order to stand behind these investment decisions, it is imperative to understand the terminology and processes within the financial systems development. Assets Assets are items of ownership that can be converted into cash or have an exchange value. They are investments this company has made. From an accounting point of view, assets can be divided further into two categories, current and long-term assets. Current assets are cash or other liquid items that can be turned into cash within one year. Marketable securities are short term, low risk investments such as, the current stock you hold and what it is worth or can be sold at. Accounts receivable are debts owed to this company by consumers for products and services provided already on credit. Inventories are assets comprised of raw materials such as cabinetry, sinks, and appliances including kitchens being currently installed that ABC Inc. still owns. There are other current assets that we will view on our balance sheet later on and they are mostly prepaid expenses and deferred assets as well as expenditures for future costs such as insurance, rent and interest. Intangible assets have no physical existence. These can include intellectual property or employees who attain knowledge and skill (NCU, 2011. 7:13). If the employee leaves to go to another organization, this is considered an intangible asset. Perception of the company within the community is important. Take for example the communities perception of the company. Wal-Mart and most recently Target with their credit card theft issue experienced intangible assets. Copyrights, patents and goodwill are also intangible assets. ââ¬Å"Recently, I was asked if I was going to fire an employee who made a mistake that cost the company $600,000. No, I replied, I just spent $600,000 training him. Why would I want somebody to hire his experience?â⬠-Thomas J. Watson (founder of IBM). Liabilities A liability is an obligation to creditors, an entity arising from past transactions, where the settlement can result in the transfer of assets,à services or other yielding of benefits in the future. They include any type of borrowing from persons or banks for improving on a business or increasing personal income. Liabilities of this company are duties or responsibilities that require settlement by future use of assets at or by a specific date, over a short or long time period or possibly on demand. Liabilities are categorized as current and long-term classification. Classifying liabilities as either current or long term will assist ABC Incââ¬â¢s CFO assess if the risk of these liabilities will involve disbursement of cash or further company assets in the near or distant future. A current liability will be satisfied within one year. Diving deeper into the definition of current liabilities, a company also identifies them as debts that are expected to be taken care of with current assets or with the use of other current liabilities. Accounts payable are considered the total sum of monies or obligations owed to purveyors for goods and/or services purchased with credit. When accounts payable are paid off, it represents a negative cash flow for the company. Short-term debt otherwise known as notes payable is the reimbursement that will occur within the next year to satisfy a debt. Items that are known monies of the company that have not been paid such as the salary for employees or taxes and deferred or unearned profit that has been received for products that have not been distributed are classified within the current liability category (NCU, 2011. 7:23-24). Long-term liabilities are debts payable over a longer period of time and unlike current liabilities, extend beyond one year. Examples of these are long-term debts, a capitol lease and deferred taxes. Long-term debt involves the obligation of our company to compensate our providers for a period of time that extends beyond one year. Currently, ABC Incââ¬â¢s long-term debt consists of the construction of buildings overseas as well as most of our products utilized in the assembly of the kitchens. A capitol lease is a contract that requires this organization to make scheduled payments in exchange for the use of a certain asset. An agreement is made between ABC Inc. and another proprietor to compensate for use of things such as equipment, the plant or property. ABC Inc. needs to bear this risk and act as if it is owned as a company asset. Deferred taxes are taxes this company owes but has yet to pay. They appear as a liability because eventually they will be paid for however currently the company has exceeded its financialà income. Owners Equity or Shareholders Equity Owners or shareholders equity is the ownerships interest in a corporation in the form of common or preferred stock. This amount is calculated and identified as shareholders equity, net worth or book value (Averkamp, 2013). The equity a company has is determined by taking the total assets and subtracting the total liabilities. Equity is the quantity of ABC Incââ¬â¢s assets that you as shareholders own, as opposed to what the company borrowed. Ownerââ¬â¢s equity is also classified as net worth or net assets; itââ¬â¢s your interest as owners in this company. Equity can be considered as the calculation of a companyââ¬â¢s money that is left over if an asset were converted to cash and all of the current and long-term liabilities against it are paid. Equity is the stock this company and you as individuals possess, it is the value of the assets that you the proprietor actually own. Assets are equal to equity plus liabilities, thus indicating how much of the companyââ¬â¢s asset s belong to or are owned and by whom. The Balance Sheet The balance or statement of financial position lists the companyââ¬â¢s assets and liabilities, providing a model of the corporationââ¬â¢s financial position at any given time. The balance sheet summarizes the remainder of all the assets, liabilities and overall worth of a companyââ¬â¢s accounts as of a specific date, usually the last day of the accounting period or the last day of the quarter or fiscal year (Thomsett, 2011). The fundamental accounting equation is; the sum of all asset account balances is equal to the sum of liabilities plus net worth accounts. It can at times be utilized and analyzed as an estimate of the liquidation worth of the corporation, aiding in foreseeing the value that would be left if the assets were bought and liabilities remunerated. A balance sheet must provide a fair and valid view of an organizationââ¬â¢s state of affairs as well as abiding by the provisions of GAAP in its preparation. A balance sheet states: What assets the company owns How assets are paid for What the company owes or what they are liable for Amount left after satisfying their debts Balance Sheet Analysis and Current Ratio Analyzing the balance sheet assesses the companyââ¬â¢s value, control and short term cash needs. The balance sheet is a quantitative summary of a companyââ¬â¢s financial situation or condition at a specific point in time, including but not limited to assets, liabilities and net worth. The first part of a balance sheet shows all the productive assets a company owns, and the second part shows all the financing procedures, the liabilities and the shareholders equity. This is better seen from the table demonstrated on the next page. The asset accounts are added together, providing the total amount of the corporationââ¬â¢s properties prior to being decreased by debts and obligations. The balance sheet is comprised of assets and liabilities, each with similar sub-groups providing a final explanation of the balance sheet subsection for reference. The total of all liabilities plus net worth accounts is always equal to the total of all assets, WITHOUT EXCEPTION! ââ¬Å"How is the balance accomplished? The sum of liabilities and net worth is always equal to the value of all asset accounts because of double-entry bookkeeping. Every entry has a debit and a credit and these are equal in value. They may also be thought of as a plus and a minus. At any time, the sum of all accounts in the corporate books will add up to zero, because debits and credits offset one another ââ¬Å"(Thomsett, 2013). It is important to remember that creditors often compare a companyââ¬â¢s current assets and current liabilities to evaluate whether or not the company has adequate working capital to endure their short-term financial needs. This comparison can be summarized in the companyââ¬â¢s current ratio. The current ratio is the percentage of current assets in relation to their current liabilities. A higher current ratio gives the implication of the company experiencing less risk of a cash deficit in the near future (NCU, 2011. 7:727). The Income Statement The income statement shows the companyââ¬â¢s net income or profitability during a specific period of time. The income statement can also be referred to as the profit and loss, or ââ¬Å"P&Lâ⬠statement, and the net income is also referred to as the companyââ¬â¢s earnings (NCU, 2011). The income statement is based on the accounting equation that; income equals revenue minus expenses which in turn illustrates the value of the ownerââ¬â¢s equity as increasing or decreasing. The income statement analysis explains how the profitability ofà the company relates to the companyââ¬â¢s shares. Different ratios are used providing information on ABC Incââ¬â¢s operation and worth (NCU, 2011). Conclusion This leaves us now analyzing not only the national but also the international fiscal aspects of ABC Complete Kitchens Incorporated. Generating sales overseas is taking this company to new heights within the business world. The income statement or statement of financial performance catalogs the companyââ¬â¢s revenues and expenses. It is putting our name on the map while increasing profit, employment opportunities and as the Board of Directors; you are responsible for maintaining this stature. This position is not only exciting, it is manageable as well. As a project manager I foresee significant advancement within all of the departments. If everyone involved collaborates cohesively, communicates respectfully and complies with ABC Complete Kitchen Incorporatedââ¬â¢s mission and vision, the finality will be a company that ultimately produces an exceptional product with complete customer and corporate satisfaction. My Organization Style Of An Organization - 1269 Words
My Organization Style Today organizations are face with more and more competitors within the same industry. This process inherits different behaviors to accommodate more work as oppose to compensation. With my current organization, we are stricken with the needs to improve and process more to stay align with our competitors. Currently, there are 14,000 staffed members throughout the entire organization as a whole. Taking into consideration the need to create control cost(s), staffing, quality/quantity etc. In doing so, this process creates stimulated compensation(s), bonuses and merit(s) base outlines to remain competitive. Transformation In Bless Me Ultima - 1980 Words
Bless Me, Ultima is a transformative novel truly represented by the series of events that Antonio experienced. Throughout the story, Antonio was forced to transform from a boy to a man after the severity of tensions of opposites in his life caused him to question everything he had ever known. Antonio reflected upon battles of opinions in his own household, religious differences, and stepping outside of his cultural upbringing for the first time. When Antonio witnessed an extreme amount of death, the sight of the golden carp, and the magical healing powers of Ultima he began to question his Catholic roots and potential participation in the priesthood. When God failed to respond to Antonio s consistent questioning, he was no longerâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Never. It was frightening to think of missing mass on Sunday, then dying and for that one mortal sin to go to hell forever. (Anaya 199-200) This phrase specifically shows the complexity in which Antonio thinks about the commandments of religion at such a young age, especially in the aspect of questioning what is happ ening after death. Aside from the constant death, introducing Antonio to the golden carp is the primary reason behind his questioning of Catholicism and just gods in general. This statement alone combines both Catholicism and Paganism. He presents us with the verbiage of the cross in his Church, along with the golden carp that he physically saw and was told to never harm. Capital punishment is crimes most dreaded consequence, death. Hanging was Canadas form of capital punishment up until 1976 when it was abolished. Websters Dictionary defines capital punishments as: The penalty of death for the commission of a crime. (Websters, 1994, 43). The chance of capital punishment being reinstated in Canada has been very slim up until now. Recently the Canadian Alliance Party has put forth efforts to reinstate it, which has put the controversial topic back up for debate. This has divided many Canadians concerning their beliefs. Capital punishment should never be reinstated in Canada as it is a barbaric practice that is unjust. Reid, Petocz Taylor (2009) addressed a very specific challenge that exists with regard to implementing a curriculum which tackles sustainability issues in business education courses. They revealed that while some students of business do have considerable depth of understanding regarding sustainability and its need, many were naive and unaware of the full extent of its implications. Some had a limited understanding of sustainability as merely the act of ensuring continuity. Although, they did find evidence of students who viewed sustainability practices as a moral responsibility towards coming generations. Focu sing on existing scope of sustainability education, Wiek et al. (2013), appraised the opportunities in international education on sustainability concluding that only one out of seventeen institutions fulfil them. They went on to present the challenges presented by The Global Classroom Experiment, a composite experimental curriculum designed to fulfil those criteria. The study revealed that challenges exist in levels of administration and faculty who need to develop skills to help guide students who need to be flexible enough in worldview to contribute as well to a successful program. Kagawa (2007), conducted a study investigating perceptions of university students on sustainable development in light of their life styles, examining the effect of gender and their courses being related to the environment. The study adopted a statistical approach to investigate the matter, concluding that gender difference in perception was statistically significant although the difference become insign ificant when grouping based on courses. The subject under study in this paper is the existing gap in knowledge of college students enrolled in hospitality and related courses to be specific, putting emphasis on tentative gender differences by studying how they understand sustainability and therefore how academics could approach sustainability education for these people to ensure a standard of education which integrates sustainability education with the coursework. Unlike Kagawa(2007), the paper uses a qualitative research design to approach the issue. Research Questions The objectives of the research deals with answering the following: How do these future workers view sustainability in context of the hospitality industry? Are there any difference in the perception about sustainability between the male and female subjects? Research Methods The research is based upon a qualitative approach. The data consist of answers to a set of ten open-ended questions by twelve subjects six of them male and rets female, who are pursuing college courses which are relevant to the hospitality and tourism business industry. The specific methodology used here follows the guidelines of grounded theory. The data corpus has been divided into two sets, one for male interviewees and the other for females. The questions addressed their views about sustainability, its role in the hospitality industry and their home country. Core theoretical concepts relevant to the research questions are thus developed based on the responses. Tentative links between those concepts are developed, followed by verification through re-analysis of the data in context of those concepts and links (Graue, 2015). This is achieved through coding strategy which included open coding, axial coding and selective coding (Birks Mills, 2015). Open Coding is the practice of identifying, categorizing and cataloguing concepts within the textual data which could lead to relevant theories within the context of the relevant topic under study (Glaser, 2016). Repetitive or synonymous words which could lead up to common themes are noted and documented. The identified distinct themes are then used for further investigation (Urquhart, 2016). Axial Coding is the practice of relating the identified categories or themes to one another with the aim of determining any tentative association or causal relationship from a generalized point of view (Zhang Wildemuth, 2016). Selective Coding is concerned with taking into consideration the identified relationships in the axial coding step and then trying to determine the core or principal category supporting some theory which addressed the research question (Smith, 2015). Findings and key themes The primary idea of sustainability was found to be attributed by the males using concepts such as continuation, recycling, maintain and environment. For example, participant #2, is quoted to be referring to sustainability as I think it means something that can be continued (International, 19, #2). Similarly, participant #7 said, Something that is permanent or that can be recycled (International, 22, # 7). Notice that such explanations are quite short and vague. It was observed that they lacked cohesiveness in their concepts about what kind of role and how sustainability could play in their industry. Participant 10 was found to identify the concept with maintaining business rather than ensuring environmental sustainability through business practices. Relating to sustainability and initiatives, he said, The ability to maintain certain levels for a long time. I think mainly it would be to build and maintain customer loyalty. (International, 25, # 10). Although participant #16 admitted to not having a very good idea about sustainability, he revealed to identify sustainability practices in the industry with green energy. The relevance of such practices according to him is stated as, otherwise greenhouse effect and global warming will get worse. (International, 24, #16). Therefore the focus although is correct from moral perspective, it is suggested that he might lack, the insight regarding the business aspect of sustainability practices in the industry. Participant #18 displayed detailed knowledge about sustainability concerns and also pointed out water and energy conservations as options of sustainability practice, however he again failed to aptly explain why he felt that sustainability is important to his industry save for being a socio-ecological ideal, saying just, Yes it is very important. The females responses were found to be more descriptive. The primary idea of sustainability was found to be attributed using concepts such as environment, long-term, protection, business and customer. Notable among the answers is the following quote, Yes. As people become more and more environmentally conscious, future businesses should consider it. Otherwise, people will remember it as a bad business and gradually stop using it. (International, 20, #22) Participant #22 therefore could successfully identify the appeal of sustainability practices to customers and given rising global awareness and concern, its value as a marketing strategy. Her summarization of sustainability, emphasizes it in light of how essential it is to balance ecological concerns with business operations and thus how environmental sustainability relates to economic sustainability of the firm as well. possibility to last and maintain without environmental damage. Contrary to that, the female participants, were found to be unable to identify sustainability practices and associated sustainability initiatives in the hotel industry with meeting customer needs, diversifying, etc. Participant #14, answered, To improve the experience of customers, for example, in the food and beverage department, we can try the innovation of dishes, varieties and prices, which are more affordable. (International, 24, #14). Participant #13 said, regarding initiatives as, Diversify the business to meet customer needs (International, 25, #13). Again, Participant #11, said, it is a process that a hotel business keep doing something. For example, a hotel's remains unique from other hotels. (International, 23, #11) This statement when considered with her answer to sustainability, means that although she views sustainability in context of marketing advantage, she lacks insight regarding the ideals of ecological sustainability. None of the females could identify any of the existing sustainability initiatives in the hospitality, suggesting that even though they have concept of what sustainability entails, but lack insight about the operational aspects within the industry. Both the groups thus seem to be insufficiently educated regarding the matter but their gap in knowledge is focussed in differing areas. It is apparent that the male participants are more sensitive towards environmental sustainability and its implementation rather than the economic and social aspect of it. They also seem to have more coherent idea about sustainable practices. In contrast to the male counterparts, the female respondents seem to be more sensitive towards economic sustainability (Alhaddi, 2015). They seem to be more aware of how unsustainable practices could adversely affect business in the long run and the marketing benefits of sustainable practices. However they seem to lack awareness about practices which support sustainability. Conclusions The males were more likely to view sustainability as environmental and ecological imperative whereas the females emphasised that sustainability is a business imperative for the long run. The males seem to focus more towards sustainability initiatives which could be and ought to be employed such as recycling, water and food conservation, use of green energy. The females on the other hand, expressed a more theoretical understanding of the rationale behind sustainability than actual practical sustainability initiatives that are undertaken by governments and hotels.
